Mine safety officer

A mine safety officer is a person who oversees the occupational health and safety systems of a mine. The officer reports workplace accidents, compiles accident statistics, assesses the hazards to workers' safety and health, and proposes solutions or new measures and techniques.

About mine safety officer

Accidents are the starting material and they are used twice. The first use is the individual report: what happened, to whom, why. The second is the statistics, which is where a pattern becomes visible: the same place, the same shift, the same task recurring across reports that each looked isolated. The officer compiles those statistics and suggests solutions on that basis.

Prevention is the point of the role. The officer assesses the hazards present, proposes measures and techniques, ensures compliance with the safety regulations, and manages the emergency procedures.

Health is treated alongside safety. The officer monitors the health of the workers, supports the worker health programmes, and carries out drug and alcohol testing, which in an environment this hazardous is a safety control rather than a disciplinary one. The officer also passes on the relevant information at shift handover and copes with the pressure of unexpected circumstances.
