About live animal transporter
The transporter plans the journey: the route, the travelling time, the stops for watering and rest, the weather forecast and the staffing of the vehicle. The vehicle designed for transporting animals is prepared: partitions, bedding, ventilation, drinkers and documentation.
The transporter loads and unloads animals calmly and without driving them, working with their natural direction of movement, assesses their behaviour and identifies an animal that should not travel: lame, sick, exhausted, late in pregnancy. During the journey their condition and welfare are monitored and anything that changes is acted on.
The transporter manages animal biosecurity: washing and disinfecting the vehicle between consignments, not mixing animals from different herds without need, and keeping records, because transporting live animals is one of the routes by which disease spreads. Vehicle approval, a transporter authorisation and a certificate of competence for the people handling animals are all required by animal transport legislation.
