About animal care attendant
Care covers the tasks that repeat every day: feeding to a set diet, watering, washing, grooming coat, claws and teeth, and exercise — walking, a run, play. The attendant knows the principles of animal nutrition. Environmental enrichment belongs here as well: arranging a run or a terrarium so that an animal has something to do.
The attendant also monitors the health and welfare of the animals, assesses their behaviour and reports changes to the veterinary surgeon: loss of appetite, lameness, aggression, apathy. Animal biosecurity is managed — quarantine for new arrivals, disinfection, separate equipment for the sick.
Training and advice are part of the work too. The attendant teaches an animal basic behaviours and explains to owners what their animal needs and what it must not be allowed to do. With reptiles, controlled breeding conditions are added: temperature, humidity, lighting. An attendant in charge of animals works under national animal welfare legislation, with treatment reserved to veterinary surgeons.
