About innovation officer
The innovation officer looks for improvement in what already works. The officer reviews manufacturing and service processes, names the places where the company loses time, material or a customer, and identifies new business opportunities: another use for a technology already owned, another buyer, another form of service. The officer also follows novel technologies and innovations across different areas of business.
The officer develops business plans for innovation projects, runs risk management — what happens if a new solution does not work at production scale — and improves business processes so that a new product can be made without stopping the existing output.
The work also involves persuading people and leading a team. The officer manages the staff working on innovative projects or concepts and provides their training, and secures support for innovation initiatives from other directors. The aim is for the company to respond faster to market changes and to be less exposed to disruption. Formal requirements are set by the employer.
