About home care aide

The help concerns everyday activities. The aide assists with personal hygiene, dressing, feeding and moving about, administers medication according to the instructions of medical staff, and supports communication where illness makes speech or hearing difficult. The aide does this in a way that does not take independence away: helping with what a person cannot do alone, and not doing for them what they can still manage.

The aide also accompanies the person, talks with them and keeps them company. They support people adjusting to physical disability — after a stroke, an amputation, an accident — and help clients with special needs adapt a home and the rhythm of a day to what is now possible.

The aide observes health and reports changes. They watch for loss of appetite, confusion, pressure sores, a change in weight, fluids left undrunk, and a situation in the home that threatens safety.
