About harpsichord maker
An instrument is built to a plan. The maker works from instructions, schematics and drawings and makes the parts in turn: the case, the soundboard, the keyboard, the jacks with the plectra that pluck the string, bridges and ribbing. The maker works the wood — planing, sanding, turning on a lathe — because a harpsichord is largely made of wood, and then assembles the parts into an instrument.
The maker knows the materials used in instrument making: species of wood, how they dry and how they answer to humidity, types of string, and the materials a plectrum is cut from. They choose them for the design, because the species of wood affects the sound of the instrument.
A finished instrument needs regulating. The maker tunes it, tests it and checks the action of every key: the force of the pluck, evenness of tone, the damping of the strings. The maker decorates the instrument as well, with a painted case, inlay or gilding, and cares for instruments in use: tuning, re-quilling, restringing and repairing them. The trade calls for skill in woodworking, turning and tuning.
