About government minister

What do ministers do? Minister duties and responsibilities cover legislative work and supervision of the department's own staff. The minister manages the implementation of public policy, which means seeing that an announcement turns into a regulation, a budget line and an office that acts on it. The minister also takes legislative decisions: sending bills forward, withdrawing them, or changing their content after consultation. The work draws on constitutional law and legislative procedure.

The role of a minister in government also means representing the government to parliament, to other states and to citizens. Ministers answer questions from members of parliament, defend the budget of their department and explain decisions in front of cameras. Crisis management techniques apply when a flood, a breakdown or an epidemic happens. Ministers also take part in brainstorming sessions with civil servants and advisers.

The minister works to the principles of good governance: transparent spending, accountability to parliament and equal treatment of citizens. Appointment to minister positions comes from the head of state or the head of government, depending on the constitution, and ministers answer to parliament for their department.
