About freight transport dispatcher

The freight dispatcher receives and relays messages, tracks vehicles and equipment, and keeps records of the tasks performed. The dispatcher sets routes, chooses the mode of transport and, on combined movements, coordinates several modes at once; where part of the journey goes by water, they analyse ship data and work with the water transport crew. The dispatcher gives oral instructions to drivers and makes independent operational decisions when conditions change mid-journey.

The dispatcher also prepares the legal and contractual papers for the parties to the carriage, applies road transport regulations including drivers' hours, and works in the control software that holds consignments, vehicles and drivers matched to each other.

The dispatcher is also responsible for keeping equipment and vehicles fit for service, which means keeping track of inspection and repair dates. Transport management concepts are applied too, for example arranging work so as to reduce empty running. Formal requirements are set by the employer and by national road transport rules.
