About foundry manager

The foundry manager builds the production plan: which castings run in a given week, how to load the furnaces, the moulding line and the finishing shop, and when to change over. Development of the casting processes is coordinated — changes to the moulding sand, to the running system, to heat treatment — and the manager then checks whether a change actually reduced the scrap rate. Types of metal manufacturing processes are known, which is what tells the manager what can be cast on the equipment available.

The manager also coordinates the reliability of the maintenance and engineering departments. Organisational risk is forecast and commercial risk managed: a move in scrap and energy prices, the loss of an order, the absence of one grade of charge material. Business processes are improved and costs are managed.

The manager takes part in ongoing remedial initiatives and observes the standards the company has adopted. Pressure from unexpected circumstances is handled. Formal requirements are set by the employer, and the plant itself is subject to environmental inspection.
