About fisheries deckhand
The deckhand sets and hauls nets, lines or traps, works the echo sounder when searching for a shoal, and handles the catch once it is on deck: sorting, chilling and storing the fish and preserving fish products on board. Fisheries regulations are known: closed seasons, minimum sizes, quotas and the duty to report a landing.
The deckhand also carries out seamanship tasks: they cast off and moor the vessel, assist with anchoring, stand watch, maintain the deck and the gear, and work the radio. The international regulations for preventing collisions at sea are applied; under them a vessel engaged in fishing has different duties from one that is merely under way.
The deckhand takes part in provisioning, in stores work and in looking after the crew, and in preventing pollution of the sea by oil and waste from the vessel. Qualification documents and a medical certificate are required under maritime safety rules.
