Fisheries assistant engineer

A fisheries assistant engineer is a person who helps the chief engineer of a fishing vessel check and maintain its propulsion machinery, its other machines and its auxiliary equipment.

About fisheries assistant engineer

The assistant engineer works through the engine room with the chief: checking oil and cooling levels, watching temperatures and pressures, servicing pumps, generators and winch hydraulics, and tracing a fault to its cause while the vessel is still working. The assistant engineer knows the machinery of fishing vessels, which allows faults to be dealt with at sea. Fisheries legislation applies to how the vessel operates, and the assistant engineer has to know the part of it that touches the machinery and its records.

The assistant engineer prevents marine pollution, handling fuel, oil, bilge water and waste so that nothing goes over the side.

The assistant engineer cooperates with the crew on safety, survival and health care on board. They operate the vessel's life-saving equipment, are trained to survive at sea in the event of abandoning ship, and know the international regulations for preventing collisions at sea. They use maritime English terminology. Certificates are set by national maritime rules.
