Electric meter technician

An electric meter technician is a person who installs and maintains the electricity metering systems of premises and buildings, fitting the equipment in accordance with the law, carrying out repairs, resolving the other problems that arise, testing the devices and advising on how they are to be used and maintained.

About electric meter technician

The installation matters for billing as well as technically. A meter is the point at which supply is measured and billed, so it is fitted to the rules that govern it and sealed, and a technician's work on it is recorded. The technician works from technical documentation.

The practical work is cable work. The technician uses electrical cable tools and hand cable tools, works with the electrical connection accessories a meter installation needs, and applies occupational health and safety standards. The cable tools are used to strip, crimp, cut and join the wires of the installation.

Testing and advice close each visit. The technician performs test runs, uses testing devices to confirm that a meter reads correctly and that the installation is safe, troubleshoots what the readings do not explain, and advises the occupier on using and maintaining the equipment.
