Dance teachers instruct students in a recreational context in the various dance genres and forms, such as ballet, jazz, tap, ballroom, hip-hop, latin, folk dance etc. They provide students with a notion of dance history and repertoire, but mainly focus on a practice-based approach in their courses, in which they assist students in experimenting with and mastering different dance and dramatic expression styles and techniques and encourage them to develop their own style. They cast, choreograph and produce performances, and coordinate the technical production and the set, props and costume usage on stage.
About dance teacher
As a dance teacher, you will inspire and guide students in exploring the rich diversity of dance forms and styles, from classical ballet and contemporary dance to hip-hop, jazz, ballroom, and folk traditions. Your primary role is to create engaging, supportive learning environments where students can develop technical skills, artistic expression, and confidence. Beyond teaching technique, you will help students understand dance history and cultural context, but your emphasis will be on practical, experiential learning where students experiment with movement, develop their own unique style, and grow as performers and individuals. You will design lesson content tailored to different skill levels and learning styles, assess student progress, and adapt your teaching methods to bring out each student's potential.
Your responsibilities extend beyond the studio to include casting decisions, choreography creation, and production management for performances. You will direct movement experiences, coordinate technical elements like sets, props, and costumes, and work with performers to internalize choreographic material so it becomes natural and emotionally authentic. A successful dance teacher must be a skilled performer yourself, demonstrating technical expertise while also serving as a role model and source of inspiration within the community arts context.
