About construction scaffolder
The scaffolder starts from the ground and from a plan. Two-dimensional drawings are interpreted, the bearing capacity of the ground or the slab checked, base plates set out, and the structure then built from scaffolding components: standards, ledgers, bracing, decks and ladders. Every lift is plumbed and levelled, because a deviation at the bottom grows with each level above it.
The scaffolder builds working platforms, positions guard rails, toe boards and props, ties the scaffold to the building at the spacing its height and loading require, and fences off the passages and danger zones underneath. Construction materials are inspected and bent, cracked or corroded components rejected; in timber scaffolds the scaffolder recognises the signs of wood rot.
The work happens at height, so construction health and safety procedures are followed, a harness is worn while the top lifts go up, and the job is done ergonomically. Depending on national rules, scaffolder requirements can include a certificate of competence obtained by course and examination and a medical clearance for work at height.
