About construction safety manager
The construction safety manager inspects the site: excavation support, scaffolding, fall protection, the condition of plant, temporary services, signage and walkways. Construction methods are known, so the assessment covers not only what is there now but the sequence of work, including places where two crews work above or beside each other.
The manager advises on safety improvements, stops work being carried out unsafely, and talks to site managers and to crews with human factors in mind: haste before a deadline, habit, group pressure.
The manager records accidents and incidents, establishes the cause, prepares the findings and sees that corrective measures go in, and also monitors the health of the workforce: examinations, contraindications, exposure to noise and dust. Environmental law is part of the knowledge, because a site produces waste, noise and effluent. Where more than one contractor works on a site, a separate safety coordinator is appointed by the client under construction safety rules.
