About carpet weaver
The work is machine work with a craft behind it. The weaver sets up and runs the specialised equipment for the type of covering being made, since carpets are produced by several different methods — weaving, knotting and tufting among them — and each needs the machine prepared differently. Textile designs are developed or worked up from a specification, and the weaver translates a pattern into what the machine has to do, thread by thread and colour by colour. Materials are ordered as the run requires, matched to the type of carpet and the wear it has to take.
Carpet weavers keep their own machines going. Routine maintenance is carried out on the looms, and faults are traced and corrected.
The craft rests on knowing the properties of textile materials and how wool and synthetic fibre behave differently under tension and in wear, on textile techniques and technologies, and on the types of carpet and what each is suited to. The work also calls for constant attention. Formal requirements are set by the employer.
