About fashion designer

Design begins with an idea and a fabric. The designer matches cloth to cut using knowledge of textile material properties: how a weave drapes, how it behaves after washing, how it takes dye. Drawings and pattern work are prepared in specialised design software, and the choice of construction draws on textile techniques such as weaving, knitting and finishing. Designers also look for improvement in what they already produce, changing a cut, a seam layout or a sewing method when the garment comes out better for it.

They monitor developments in the textile manufacturing market, meaning which fabrics are available and what properties they have. They identify target markets for new designs, deciding who a collection is meant for. A designer may work in one narrow field: sportswear, children's clothing, footwear or accessories.

The work draws on fashion history and art history as sources of ideas for cuts and patterns. Someone starting out draws, sews sample garments and learns to recognise fabrics by hand. Formal requirements are set by the employer.
