A building information modelling consultant is a person who advises, supports and assesses clients on the business processes around building information modelling, and construction teams on the application of BIM technology. The consultant manages the communication with staff and clients, implements BIM strategies and solutions to reach defined outcomes, and produces documents such as flowcharts, work programmes and best-practice manuals.

About building information modelling consultant

The work is organisational as well as technical. BIM is applied by several parties working on the same model, and the consultant guides clients and construction teams in working to agreed processes and conventions, and implements the strategies and solutions that bring the project to its deliverables.

Understanding the client comes first. The consultant analyses the business requirements, identifies the client's needs, works from business processes and business analysis, and interprets the business information available.

Documenting the result is what makes it last. Flowcharts, work programmes and best-practice manuals are how a way of working survives the consultant leaving. Communicating with the customer service department, improving the client relationship and working from a knowledge of building information modelling itself complete the role, which sits between a construction team and a software discipline and belongs fully to neither.
