Aviation safety officer

An aviation safety officer is a person who plans and develops the safety procedures of an aviation company. The officer analyses the safety regulations and the restrictions that apply to the company's operations and, on that basis, directs the activities of the staff so that the safety measures are applied as the regulations require.

About aviation safety officer

Regulation is the raw material. Aviation safety is written down in detail, in common aviation safety rules and in the aviation standards and recommended practices, and the officer's first task is to establish what those rules mean for this company, these aircraft and these routes.

Implementing a system is the substantial work. The officer implements safety management systems, which is how safety stops being a set of rules and becomes a process that collects reports, examines them and changes practice. The officer also works to the standards set by national and international safety programmes.

Two parts of the role are about people and information. The officer works as part of the flight crew, uses several communication channels, and follows the ethical code of conduct for transport services. Ensuring data protection in flight operations belongs here as well.
