About asphalt plant operator
The work starts with the raw material. The operator prepares sand, gravel and stone, operates mobile equipment to bring it to the plant, and then the mineral crushing and sorting equipment, because a mix has a set particle grading and every fraction enters it in a stated quantity.
Mixing happens hot. The operator tends the automatic machines that combine aggregate with asphalt binder, configures the machine's control panel for the recipe in hand, and controls temperature — of the aggregate, the binder and the finished mix — because a mix too cold cannot be compacted while an overheated one loses the properties of its binder.
The operator also checks quality, taking samples of the mix for testing, knows the types of asphalt mixture and what each is for, and reacts to departures in composition or temperature. They also arrange transport of the mix to the construction site so that it arrives before it cools. The work happens at high temperature, in dust and in binder fumes.
