About animal hydrotherapist

The animal hydrotherapist uses the resistance and the buoyancy of water: a submerged animal loads its joints less while its muscles work harder, so exercise in a pool or on an underwater treadmill produces movement that would be painful on dry ground. Post-operative care, pre-operative conditioning and general fitness work all run this way, always inside the limits a veterinary surgeon and national legislation set.

A session starts with preparing the treatment equipment: checking water temperature and quality, the harness, the rails and the treadmill. The hydrotherapist manages animal biosecurity, disinfecting equipment between patients, checking the condition of an animal's skin, and keeping anything with an infection out of the water.

The therapist looks after animal welfare, watches for signs of pain and stress, stops an exercise when an animal tires, and advises owners on care between visits. Difficult people have to be handled too. To become an animal hydrotherapist, a person needs a working knowledge of animal welfare, animal biosecurity and safe handling of animals.
