About vessel steering instructor

The instructor teaches in the classroom and on the water. In the classroom they deliver the theory: the construction of a vessel and its physical elements, the principles of manoeuvring, the regulations, light signals and marks on the waterways, and what to do in unusual situations. Afloat, the instructor demonstrates manoeuvres and then hands the helm to the student to build steering skills.

The instructor works with people of differing capability. They adapt teaching methods to each student's potential, support students in their learning and show understanding for their situation. They also prepare students for the theory and practical examinations.

The instructor is responsible for safety on board and carries out a vessel inspection before setting out, knows the safety equipment and enforces its use, and keeps up with changes in the regulations and in training practice. They may also supervise steering examinations.
