Statistical assistant

A statistical assistant is a person who collects data for statistical research, applies statistical formulas to it, and prepares the reports, tables and charts in which the results are presented.

About statistical assistant

The statistical assistant job description runs from raw data to finished report. The assistant gathers the data a study needs, processes it into a usable form, and checks it for errors such as a figure entered twice or a missing response. Analytical mathematical calculations are then carried out and statistical analysis techniques applied, following the scientific method the study was designed around. Charts, diagrams and tables are produced, and technical reports are drafted to accompany them.

A statistics assistant works to a statistician or a researcher who sets the question, and much of the value of the role lies in preparing material accurately enough that the conclusions drawn from it hold.

The work rests on mathematics and statistics, on being comfortable with data processing in whatever software the organisation uses, and on the care to notice when a number looks wrong rather than passing it on. Statistical assistant qualifications are set by the employer, and the level asked for varies with how much of the analysis, rather than the data preparation, sits with the post.
