Post-production supervisor

A post production supervisor job description is largely scheduling and money. The supervisor helps plan the flow of the production so that the post phase is accounted for and properly budgeted from the start, rather than being what is left over when shooting overruns. From there the role manages the post budget, monitors production costs as the work proceeds, and controls compliance with the production schedule, so that each stage reaches the next on time. Deadlines are fixed by delivery dates that do not move, which is what gives this job its particular pressure.

The supervisor works with the picture editor and the music editor, collaborates with the pre-production team whose decisions created the material, and consults the production manager on anything that affects the production as a whole. The work of the post team is supervised throughout.

Delivery and distribution of the final product are the supervisor's responsibility, which means making sure the finished version exists in the formats it has been promised in.

A post supervisor needs accounting technique sufficient to hold a budget, the organisational memory to know where every element of a production is, and the diplomacy to say plainly that something cannot be afforded. Requirements for the role are set by each production.
