About mine surveying technician

The technician operates surveying instruments underground and on the surface, records where a working face now stands, and keeps a register of mining operations that documents the advance of the workings. The technician also sets out the boundaries of the mine site on the ground, since extraction may only take place within defined limits.

The technician performs survey calculations in line with requirements, including coordinates and distances, and compares them, so that any discrepancies between results are caught. Measurements and calculations are used to study how mining operations are progressing, and those changes are documented in the register.

Software is used to download and interpret the data the instruments produce. The technician monitors the condition of the surveying equipment, so that an instrument out of adjustment does not produce wrong readings, and works in an ergonomic way, including in confined underground workings and awkward positions. Surveying authorisations for mining work are set by national mining and geodetic rules.
