Metalworking lathe operator

A metalworking lathe operator is a person who sets up and works a lathe by hand, cutting metal to the dimensions and the shape a drawing calls for while the workpiece turns on its axis.

About metalworking lathe operator

Setting the machine is the first part of the work. The operator fits the workpiece and the tooling, selects the gearing that drives the lead screw, and sets the speed ratio for the material and the cut being made. Test pieces are run and measured before production starts, to check whether the setting is right. During the cut the operator watches the instrument readings, follows the workpiece as it moves through the machine, and adjusts feed or speed when the surface or the sound of the cut changes.

An industrial lathe operator also inspects the lathe for wear and handles the finished metal parts after turning, deburring and checking them against the drawing.

Lathe operators need to know the types of metal they cut and how each one behaves under a tool, to read a technical drawing, to measure accurately with hand instruments, and to keep the quality and cycle time of a job in balance rather than trading one away for the other. Formal requirements are set by the employer.
