About medical device engineer
Designing the device is the first field. The engineer designs medical devices, reads engineering sketches and design drawings, and works from engineering fundamentals and mathematics. The engineer also designs improvements to existing products, drawing on experience from their clinical use.
Proving the design is the second field. The engineer develops the methods and techniques for evaluating whether a design is fit for purpose, develops the procedures for carrying out tests, operates scientific measuring instruments, and performs quality control analysis. A device that is only shown to work in the laboratory is not yet a device anyone may use on a patient.
Preparing production is part of the role too. The engineer coordinates the pre-production run and develops the manufacturing schemes the device will be built to. Synthesising information is the standing skill: the design has to reconcile what clinicians need, what physics allows, what a factory can make repeatably and what the regulations require.
