About lasting machine operator
The operator starts by placing the toe in the machine, then draws the edge of the upper over the last, pulls in the sides and presses down the seat, then flattens the turned-in edges, trims off the surplus material and fixes the shape by stitching or by adhesive. A lasting machine performs these actions with a set force over a set time, so the operator adjusts it to the model and to the type of leather.
The operator knows footwear manufacturing technology and the joining methods: cemented construction, stitching, Goodyear welted construction and California construction, each of which calls for a different allowance on the upper and a different pull. Machine cutting techniques for footwear and leather materials are applied as well.
The operator judges quality on the last and after removal, checking symmetry, evenness of the pull, the absence of wrinkling at the toe and how the heel seat is set. Footwear finishing techniques are applied and the quality criteria for the product are known. Formal requirements are set by the employer, and footwear vocational training is one way into the work.
