About integration engineer

The work starts from an assessment of what is already there. The engineer reviews existing systems and components, establishes the integration requirements and defines the integration strategy: what to connect directly, what through an intermediate layer, and what to leave apart. The engineer analyses ICT system user requirements so that the final solution meets the organisation's needs.

The engineer develops and implements integration solutions: designing component interfaces, the ways data passes between systems, integrating system components, programming in scripting languages and analysing network bandwidth requirements. Wherever possible, the engineer reuses components already in use in the organisation instead of building new ones from scratch.

The engineer also finds and fixes ICT system integration faults: mismatched formats, lost messages, duplicated data. The engineer knows software component suppliers and ICT project management methodologies, and helps management decide what to buy, what to write and what to retire.
