About injection moulding operator
The duties of an injection moulding operator start with setting the machine up. The operator fits and assembles the press dies for the part being made, enters the settings on the control panel, and sets the temperature, pressure and volume of plastic to the figures given in the specification. Once production is running, the operator watches the gauge readings and the parts coming off, corrects a setting that has drifted, and stops the machine when something is wrong. Finished parts are taken off and trimmed, with excess plastic cut away using a knife or hand tools. When a fault appears, the operator troubleshoots it: checking the machine's parts, consulting technical documentation, and calling maintenance when the problem goes beyond adjustment.
The work is on a factory production floor, around hot machinery and moving dies, so personal protective equipment is worn throughout.
The skills a plastic injection moulding operator needs are practical: knowing the parts of an injection moulding machine and what each setting changes, reading gauges and catching a drift early, working to a written specification, and basic fault-finding. Because settings and dies differ from machine to machine, experience is built on the specific machines an operator runs.
