About history lecturer
The discipline is taught through its method rather than through its content. The lecturer works from historical methods, from source criticism, which is the practice of establishing what a document can and cannot be taken to show, and from periodisation, the question of where one period ends and another begins and what that division conceals.
Teaching is the core of the role. The lecturer teaches in an academic and vocational context, prepares the lesson plans, develops the course curricula, and synthesises information.
Research and teaching feed one another. The lecturer follows developments in the specialist field, where new archives, new methods and new readings change what can be said, and what is published is what the next cohort of students will be taught from and will argue against.
