Fire inspector

A fire inspector is a person who inspects buildings and properties to establish that they comply with the fire prevention and fire safety regulations, and who enforces compliance at premises that are in breach. The inspector also carries out educational work, instructing people in fire safety, in methods of fire prevention, in the policies that apply and in how to respond to a disaster.

About fire inspector

The inspector examines a building against the fire safety regulations, works from a knowledge of fire protection systems, carries out risk analysis, and manages the protection equipment. The questions are concrete: escape routes, doors, compartmentation, detection, extinguishing systems, and whether any of it will work on the day it is needed rather than on the day it was installed.

Enforcement follows a finding. The inspector advises on breaches of the regulations and enforces compliance where it is not forthcoming. An inspector's authority rests on the finding being correct, so the inspection has to be documented well enough to stand up when it is contested.

Alongside inspection, the inspector educates the public in fire safety, plans the health and safety procedures, and communicates the health and safety measures. Teaching is as much a part of this role as inspecting.
