About engine designer

The engine designer starts from requirements: power, torque, fuel consumption, permissible mass, operating conditions and emission rules. Design solutions are chosen on the basis of those requirements, bearing in mind that changing one parameter, such as mass, affects the others. Part requirements are defined and drawings of motor vehicle parts produced, the work done in computer-aided design software.

The designer knows vehicle electrical systems, including the systems that control injection, ignition and boost. Technical designs are adjusted after dynamometer testing, for example by changing port geometry, valve timing or cooling.

The designer calculates project costs: tooling, material and machining in series production. Ecological principles are applied: limiting emissions and consumption, choosing materials with repair and recovery in mind. Design trends are researched so that a new unit fits the direction the industry is taking. The designer also supervises the installation and maintenance of the equipment designed. Formal requirements are set by the employer.
