About energy trader
The energy trader watches the market: power prices on the exchange and in contracts, fuel and emission allowance prices, weather forecasts, and the running plans of generating units. The trader analyses price trends and the market, because the price of energy moves through the day and, when the weather favours renewables, can fall to nothing.
The trader calculates positions and margins, gathers financial information, knows the financial products used to hedge a price, and trades instruments on the forward market. The trader manages financial risk: price risk, volume risk and counterparty risk.
The work covers reporting and forecasting too. The trader prepares reports on the trades concluded and on trading procedures, develops a financial plan for their own book, and presents forecasts of market development to management or to clients. Economics underpins the work. Trading in energy is carried on under licence, and exchange trading runs through the members of a commodity exchange.
