Contract engineer

A contract engineer is a person who combines technical knowledge of contracts and legal matters with an understanding of technical specifications and engineering principles.

About contract engineer

The engineer interprets technical requirements and establishes whether what the contract promises can be delivered as specified. All the technical specifications and the matters set out in the contract are checked for consistency with each other, so that the contract documents do not contain conflicting requirements.

The engineer makes sure both parties are equally committed to the development of the project and keeps their obligations balanced, so that neither party is left carrying what the other agreed to.

The engineer manages budgets, assesses viability, manages orders and manages the engineering project itself. Technical drawing software, meaning CAD, is used to read and check what is being contracted for. The engineer also builds business relationships with the parties to the contract and with suppliers. The work requires a grounding in engineering principles and contract law; formal requirements are set by the employer.
