About car and van delivery driver
The job starts before setting off. The driver loads the goods to a schedule, stows them so that nothing shifts or gets damaged, checks them against the paperwork, and sets the priorities for the day: what has to arrive in the morning and what can wait until the afternoon. The driver plans the best route to each destination and analyses alternative routes using geographic information systems.
On the road, the driver handles the vehicle in urban traffic, interprets traffic lights and signs, observes road traffic regulations and behaves responsibly, keeping in mind that rearward visibility in a van is limited.
At the destination, the driver unloads the parcels, handles them properly, communicates with customers and settles matters on the spot: an absent recipient, no way in, a refusal to accept, damaged packaging. Carrying goods for hire or reward is subject to road transport legislation, on top of the general traffic rules.
