Building inspector

A building inspector is a person who inspects buildings to determine whether they comply with the specifications that apply to them, and who establishes the soundness, quality and strength of what has been built.

About building inspector

The inspector works through a structure against a list: whether the construction is appropriate for its purpose, whether the materials and workmanship meet the specification, and whether the whole complies with regulations. Knowledge of construction methods and of engineering principles is what makes that judgement possible, because an inspector has to know how an element was meant to be built before deciding whether it was. The legal systems governing the construction sector set the standard applied.

Compliance with health and safety standards is checked on every visit, both in the finished work and in how the site is being run.

Energy conservation and environmentally friendly construction practices form part of the inspection, since insulation, airtightness and installed systems are themselves subject to requirements. The inspector liaises with authorities at local level and reports problems to senior colleagues where a decision exceeds their own authority. Formal requirements and inspection powers are set by national building law.
