About boiler operator
The work is continuous supervision. The operator monitors the readings of the measuring instruments, reads the water meter, keeps track of the water level in the boiler, regulates steam pressure and controls steam flow, so that the plant delivers what the building or the process needs without running outside its limits. The operator also runs water heating equipment.
The operator carries out risk analysis, assessing what could lead to a boiler failure: a low water level, a stuck safety valve, a blocked flue, a failed feed pump.
The operator has to cope with high temperatures: some of the work is done close to hot surfaces. The role asks for knowledge of how boilers and steam systems are built. Certification for operating pressure equipment is set by national technical inspection rules.
