About architectural drafter
The drafter produces architectural sketches and drawings, creates technical plans and prepares designs on computers using CAD software, and also by conventional methods, with pen and paper. The work follows the specifications and ideas the architect provides, and the drafter asks the architect about anything left unsettled.
A drawing needs figures and knowledge of building. The drafter performs analytical mathematical calculations, knows construction methods, and draws details so that they can be built on site, marking layer thicknesses, junctions, distances and levels. Design drawings such as floor plans, sections and elevations are prepared as well.
The drafter also knows the legal systems and building regulations governing the construction sector, and so prepares drawings in the form required for approvals and for administrative proceedings. They liaise with architects, passing on questions and comments on the design, and keep records of successive versions of the drawings.
