About anaesthetic technician
Before a procedure the technician prepares the operating theatre or the specialist room where anaesthesia will be given, together with the anaesthetic equipment: the machine, the breathing circuits, intravenous access, the drugs and the monitoring. Sterilisation techniques are applied, because some of that equipment meets the patient's airway, and medical waste is disposed of under the rules in force.
During the procedure the technician assists in inducing and maintaining anaesthesia and in the care that follows it. They examine the patient's health state, which means taking and reporting the values the clinician interprets, and all of this is carried out under supervision and on the clinician's instruction. The technician draws on pharmacology for the drugs being prepared and on human physiology to understand what anaesthesia changes in breathing and circulation.
The anaesthetic technician job description also covers record keeping in medical informatics systems and compliance with healthcare legislation and with the quality standards that apply to healthcare practice. Which qualifications are required, and how much may be done unsupervised, is set by the health professions rules of each country.
